The SL 50mm f2 ASPH. features twelve elements in ten groups; three are aspherical, used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness; and eight use an anomalous partial dispersion (APD) design to reduce chromatic aberration and colour fringing throughout the aperture range. Quiet dual stepping motors can move the focus elements from their minimum focus distance to infinity in 250ms and the minimum focus distance is 0.35m (13.8"), with a 0.2x maximum magnification.

Designed for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras the normal-length SL 50mm f2 ASPH. can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.

The lens features a portable form factor, balancing a f/2 maximum aperture with overall weight and size. Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in inclement shooting conditions. Additionally, a water-repellent AquaDura coating has been applied to the exposed elements.

New focus ring concept

Featuring a new manual focusing ring construction concept were a ring magnet with alternating polarization is embedded into the manual focusing ring alongside a sensor that monitors the magnetic field. The magnetic field changes its polarity when the ring is turned and the sensor reads the data to precisely drive the focus based on the rotational speed and angle. Photographers can quickly access the finest manual focus micro-adjustments when they need it, right at the reach of their fingertips.”

Employing extremely powerful and robust stepping motors the entire focusing throw can be travelled through completely in only around 250 milliseconds ensuring fast and reliable autofocus. The dual stepping motor autofocus design also benefits from being near-silent, suitable for both photo and video applications.
