Fast and precise AF | VXD: Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive

The 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 utilizes the renowned VXD linear motor focus mechanism. This advanced AF mechanism combines class-leading speed and precision, enabling fast and accurate focusing from MOD (Minimum Object Distance) through to infinity.

While operating faster than ever before, the VXD drive also maintains positional accuracy down to 0.005mm (0.0002 in), less than one-tenth the width of a human hair! The linear motor is also structured to reduce the vibrations produced during drive operation for superior quiet operation. Focus tracking has been vastly improved. This ensures that the dramatic, action-packed moments are never missed, whether shooting still photos or video.

TAMRON's proprietary VC takes the shakes out of handheld shooting

The lens is equipped with TAMRON's proprietary VC2 mechanism, and effectively controls camera shake that can occur when shooting at telephoto focal lengths. It also helps reduce fuzzy pictures when shooting handheld in low-light conditions which typically require slower shutter speeds.

Furthermore, using AI technologies, the lens chooses the appropriate compensation characteristics for videography at focal lengths of 100mm or less.

Half-macro photography with 1:2 magnification ratio at the 50mm end

The 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 is capable of extremely high performance when shooting close-ups, particularly for an ultra-telephoto zoom lens.

You can enjoy half-macro shooting with an MOD of 0.25m (9.8 in) and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at the 50mm zoom setting. Moreover, at the 400mm telephoto end, the MOD is 1.5m (59.1 in), which provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 for amazing, dynamic shots.

“Focus Limiter” function now added to the TAMRON Lens Utility

The dedicated TAMRON Lens Utility software developed in-house by TAMRON is compatible with the 50-400mm F4.5-6.3. This lets you customize the functions and easily update the firmware through the lens.

Additionally, with the 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 you can select the “Focus Limiter” function that allows you to limit the focus search range of the AF. This function shortens the time taken to refocus when a subject slips out of focus and prevents focusing on obstacles in front of a subject. The function can be instantly toggled using the Focus Set Button, ensuring that you never miss an unexpected photo opportunity.

Outstanding image quality throughout the entire 50-400mm zoom range

Due to the generous and effective use of special lens elements, including 2 XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), 3 LD (Low Dispersion) and 2 Aspherical lens elements, aberrations including axial chromatic aberrations are well controlled.
