Benefitting the long reach of this lens, two extra-low dispersion elements have been incorporated into the lens construction to help reduce chromatic aberration and improve overall image clarity. A minimum focus distance of 1.6' across the entire zoom range also makes this lens an effective tool for macro and close-up work.

The SDM autofocus system has also been integrated into the design, which utilizes a supersonic motor for fast, quiet autofocus operation. The lens also features a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for smooth out of focus regions and less susceptibility to highlight streaking.
