An Apple AirTag is a small, coin-shaped device designed by Apple. It uses Bluetooth technology and the vast network of Apple devices around the world to help users track and find their belongings, such as keys, wallets, and bags.
Apple AirTags work by sending out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby Apple devices. These devices then send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect privacy.
While AirTags could technically be used to track people, Apple has built in a number of safeguards to prevent this. If an unknown AirTag is travelling with someone and separated from its owner for an extended period of time, the person will receive an alert. Moreover, if the AirTag is not with its owner, it will start playing a sound after a certain period of time.
There is no specific range limit for AirTags as they leverage the Find My network, a network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices that can help locate lost items. However, to get a more precise location, the AirTag needs to be within Bluetooth range of an Apple device, which is generally around 100 meters without obstruction.
Yes, Apple AirTags are water-resistant. They have a rating of IP67 which means they can survive being in water up to 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) for approximately 30 minutes.
