Panasonic Full HD camcorders HDC-HS900 and HDC-SD900 offer 3D video recording capability Mr. DigiDirect | Friday, January 28, 2011Comments [10]

Panasonic has introduced two new Full HD 3MOS camcorders, the HDC-SD900 and HDC-HS900 for professional-level video shooting in 3D and 2D. These camcorders record 1920×1080/60p in Full HD and are capable of 3D video shooting with Panasonic's 3D Conversion Lens (VW-CLT1). They incorporate Panasonic’s 3MOS system for recording bright, low-noise videos, even in low lighting.

The Panasonic HDC-SD900 and HDC-HS900 sport a 7.59 Megapixel (2.53MPix x 3) 3MOS sensor and a F1.5 Leica Dicomar Lens with 20x zoom. The HDC-HS900 has 220GB hard drive, while both cameras can record to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.

These Full HD camcorders feature the Crystal Engine PRO, which instantly processes the large amount of data that goes into full-HD quality for extremely clear, crisp motion images; HYBRID OIS (Optical Image Stabilizer) that helps correct blurring due to hand and arm shake; iA (Intelligent Auto) with Face Recognition, 5.1-channel Surround Sound System and Eco Mode.

The HDC-HS900 offers a manual ring and comes with a 3.5-inch touchscreen display. The slightly lower-spec HDC-SD900 has a 3-inch LCD and no manual ring.

Generally, the higher price point cameras carry a viewfinder such as the Panasonic SD700, HS700, SD900 and the HS900 Camcorders. Also, manufacturers tend to eliminate the Electronic viewfinder to reduce the size of the actual camera and to keep the overall cost down as well...

The new idea of no view finder to put to your eye is a backward move in video cameras,Oh yes they are great if you dont take them outside, but I do lots of wild life work with my camera, so i have had to sell my Panasonic HDC-HS20,If I take it out side on a sunny day you can not see in the screen because of sunlight and reflections In the last 35 yearsI have used nothing but Panasonic,14 cameras in all, I have gone to a SONY, HDR-CX550 if there is any difference in picture quality it is very little. But the Sony has an eye piece.

Great news! The Panasonic SD900 offers a Microphone Input.

Bob Feb 19, 2011

Does the SD900 have an external MIC input? I\'d like to use my Rode Videomic with ii if possible.

I also stand corrected! You are right in saying that the HDC-SD900 also includes the focus ring and a 3.5inch LCD - the sames features found on the HDC-HS900... our sincerest apologies. The 3D Conversion Lens should materialise approximately the same time as the Camcorders. At this stage, no word on the wide converters. Stay tuned to our Facebook and twitter pages for for further announcements on the SD900 and HS 900 Camcorders!

Looks like I stand corrected! I'm pleased to hear that Panasonic Australia are bringing these models out (they've skipped a few). By the way, I think your article has a couple of errors. You say that the SD900 has no focus ring and only a 3 inch screen. But this is only true for the SD800, which it appears may not be released locally. The SD900 does indeed have a 3.5 inch screen and focus ring. Your product page already has this right, but not the article above. Will the 3D conversion lens be available too? What about the 0.8x or 0.7x wide angle converters? Do you have prices on those? Thanks, Rob.

The friendly camcorder boffins at Panasonic Australia have indicated that there will be a shipment of the HDC-HS900 camcorders coming into the country around early March. We suspect that allocations will be limited so get in early to avoid missing out!

Ron Feb 03, 2011

Are you any closer to getting the HS900 as I will be leaving AUS on the 23-2-11 and would love to buy one

Great news! Panasonic Australia has announced pricing on the new HDC-HS900 and HDC-SD900 Camcorders. You already have Panasonic's new flagship camcorders listed for sale, the HDC-HS900 and HDC-SD900, although neither is yet available for sale anywhere, even in the US. Typically Panasonic is very slow to catch up with the latest models, and often refuses to release them locally at all. I don't think pricing has even been announced yet. Do you know something I don't know? Thanks, Rob.
