The Panasonic DMC-GF1, SLR performance and quality without taking out a big camera Mr. DigiDirect | Friday, November 19, 2010Comments [1]

This Panasonic GF1 appears to be a cross between an Olympus E-P1 and the Panasonic G2 digital SLR. If you’re in the market for a take anywhere camera then you should really consider the GF1.

The 12 megapixel Live MOS sensor & 144-zone metering system from the G1, and the 460k pixel 3-inch LCD screen found in the LX3 to name a few. Even the styling from LX3 has had deep influences on the GF1.

The Lumix GF1 is accompained by 20mm f1.7 pancake lens (weighing just 100g), plus you can use the full line-up of micro Four-Thirds lenses from Olympus and Panasonic. The Panasonic 20mm f1.7, 7-14mm f4, 14-140mm f4-5.8, & 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 lenses should cover most bases; or if you already own standard Four-Thirds lenses they can be mounted to the GF1 via an adapter (DMW-MA1) – please check for autofocus compatibility.

If you prefer to use a viewfinder rather than a screen to compose images then the GF1 has you covered with an optional Live View Finder, the DMW-LVF1. The Live View Finder is attached via the hot-shoe, provides a 100% field of view, and has a 202k pixel resolution.

The GF1 with the LiveViewFinder is one of the finest digital cameras I have owned. I bought it with the pancake lens and added a 45-200mm for some flexibility. The initial kit is superb - the f1.7 20mm lens is an excellent lens especially in low light. The news lens is nopt in the 20mm's class but works well as a sports lens. Allin all, I could not have bought better.
